Taiwan's Energy Security Needs Nuclear, Ex-US Officials Say
Restarting Taiwan's mothballed nuclear power plants is one of the key things the self-governed island should do to bolster its energy security against threats from China, according to a former deputy US national security adviser and a retired American admiral.
That was the conclusion Matt Pottinger, who served on the National Security Council in President Donald Trump's first administration, and Mark Montgomery, who was previously director of operations for US Pacific Command, took away from war games held by the Foundation for Defense of Democracies in Taipei at the end of last month. Other steps they see Taiwan needing include adding liquefied natural gas storage and growing its fleet of LNG transport ships.
